Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Did you know Colonial New York City hosted the first official St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1762, when Irish immigrants in the British colonial army marched down city streets? In subsequent years Irish fraternal organizations also held processions to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The various groups merged sometime around 1850 to form a single, grand parade. St. Patrick’s Day is now widely celebrated in the United States…you’re sure to see lots of green this Sunday, March 17!
Hot Cross Buns!
Our made-from-scratch sweet dough favorite is now available!
Nutmeg, glazed fruit and raisins, finished with fondant icing…Hot Cross Buns are a seasonal favorite.
Protestant England attempted to ban the sale of the buns by bakers but they were too popular, and instead Elizabeth I passed a law permitting bakeries to sell them, but only at Easter and Christmas…making them a seasonal favorite, quite literally!
Happy Easter

Mother Knows Best
This Sunday, May 12 is Mother’s Day, a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood.
The official observance is credited to Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, PA in 1907 as she honored the memory of her mother with a small gathering of friends in her home.
The following year, Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother’s church in Grafton, WV to celebrate “Mother’s Day” on the anniversary of her mother’s death, the second Sunday of May. Ms. Jarvis and her supporters launched a grassroots campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day to honor all mothers.
By 1911, Mother’s Day was widely celebrated across the country. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made it official: Mother’s Day would be a national holiday held each year on the second Sunday in May. He said that mothers were “the greatest source of the country’s strength and inspiration.”
It is the perfect day to gather around the table and say thanks to Mom…Happy Mother’s Day!
A Father’s Day to Remember
The Ukrop’s Family Gathering has been an annual tradition for more than 50 years, bringing company associates and their families together for a day of picnic food, fun and fellowship. This year’s event will not soon be forgotten, thanks to a visit from a U.S. serviceman who surprised his family and created a lasting memory for all those in attendance.
This was not Air Force Airman 1st Class Vicente Mendoza’s first Family Gathering. In fact, he won the pie-eating contest in 2011 and his sister won the same contest in 2012! Vicente’s father, Bonfilio, has been a Ukrop’s associate for 19 years. He and his family planned to attend the Family Gathering again this year, although without Vicente (or so they thought!), who has been in basic training in Texas prior to embarking on a two- year tour of duty in Japan in about two weeks.
Vicente arranged an early arrival home and was a surprise special guest at the Family Gathering. His parents, sister and brother were all dockside as Vicente arrived on a pontoon boat. The family stood in amazement as they quickly realized it was their son and brother carrying the American flag on board as Toby Keith’s “American Soldier” played over the loudspeaker!

After a warm welcome complete with lots of hugs and tears, Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up” was played, a special request from Vicente dedicated to his father. It was an emotional reunion for the family and a particularly touching tribute to Bonfilio leading up to Father’s Day. The song includes the following lyrics, which certainly reflects how many sons and daughters feel about their father:
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.
Thank you Mendoza family and Happy Father’s Day!
A Mrs. Marshall’s Fourth of July
Barbecues and cookouts have always been a favorite American pastime, and chances are more grills fire up on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year. The holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 and is flush with patriotism, parades, fireworks…and food. Lots and lots of food!
Truth be told, no Fourth of July spread is complete without a variety of classic picnic fare, like Mrs. Marshall’s Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, Chicken Salad, BBQ, and Garden Pasta Salad. Fresh made and delicious, all of Mrs. Marshall’s items are sure to be a hit at your Independence Day gathering. And since Mrs. Marshall’s products are available at both Kroger and MARTIN’S, they’re easy to find. Happy Fourth of July!
